Do you ever feel that afternoon fatigue? Your body is exhausted. Your strength sucked dry like a lemonade in the heat of summer.

Lately, I have been feeling the dryness of the afternoon. I want to find that perfect food that will give me the burst of energy I need. Coffee, chocolate, a bowl of ice cream. Something for this tired momma. I want to kick my feet up, lay down on the softest bed imaginable with absolutely zero noise except for maybe the waves on the beach. You with me ladies?

I know many of you are. And while those foods may help. And that rest may give us a little more energy, today I hear a whispering deep in my heart.

So often I want to run to the quick fixes of this world. I want the luxury suite with the chocolates on my pillow. However, is that reality? Am I entitled because I am a hard working momma?

Our calling as mothers is tough. Yet our purpose is eternal. Our daily battles are not Little League games. No, our everyday life is about something greater than ourselves. It is about the souls that spill those Cheerios and milk all over the floor. It is about the spiritual life of the man that we feed every night. Ladies, no wonder we are exhausted. Our battles aren’t with flesh and blood. Daily we are growing mighty warriors around us. Daily we are giving of ourselves for a greater purpose.

While you wipe another sticky mess off your floor and walls remember this: your calling is worth it! Your children and your husband are worth the daily struggles of giving, loving, and letting go.

I am not saying there aren’t times when we need a little break, a little rest…oh because we do! Sometimes it is okay to walk away, take a break.

During the afternoon dryness and heat remember that God is the giver of our strength, not the coffee, chocolate or beach get-a-way. God is the provider of our mommy needs. He understands our struggle, our battle. He sees our efforts.

This challenge is for me today maybe even more than you. As I am facing the afternoon heat I am going to choose a little Jesus with my chocolate. Time with the Provider of all my needs. The Giver of my strength. My Rock and Refuge. My God. The only One I need as I battle the afternoon heat.

Ephesians 6:11-12 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
