Her little one-year-old body moves, constantly…up, down, standing, crawling, this toy that kitchen utensil. Her little body, all over, everywhere, restless.
Many times I find myself singing a song to her. You are probably familiar with it, Restless by Audrey Assad. One-year-old, restless energy. Her little body yet a mountain of energy. In time, I know that energy will be bouncing off our walls. In time her skills will match her energy and like a sling shot…snap…gone, flying ball of energy.
Her one-year-old body, restless. The potential there yet not able to reach. The desire and drive yet no skill to match. The growing knowledge yet the lack of capacity. So she is, restless.
I can relate. I have been there. A talent, I see God has blessed me with, yet I can’t seem to grasp. Passion wells in my heart yet my skills do not match. Intimacy in my relationship with God growing, yet I have not fully let go. I have not made enough room for Him. So I am, restless.
Restlessness comes when we want to leap before the bridge is built. When we are ready to dive when the rains have yet to fill. When we rip off the band aid before the wound heals. We are restless by nature.
One-year-old bodies. Lacking patience, wisdom.
Just as the song states we are restless until we rest in Him. We are up, down, standing, crawling until we hit pause. There are seasons of waiting. Painful and wearisome they may feel. Growing happens in the waiting. Find rest. Find rest for your restlessness.
Find rest. Find rest for your restlessness.
Rest in God. Slow the hurry and scurry. And rest. It’s ok; it’s ok to rest.
Matthew 11:28-30 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light. NLT
Psalm 37:7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him… ESV
Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! ESV
Many times in my life I have seen restlessness in me as a time when God was preparing me for the next step. I find it is important to have goals and vision. That way I can be alert to opportunities He is opening up to me that fit into that vision. Love the phrase in Matt 11:28, “Let me teach you”. If I’m not resting in Him, I can’t hear His voice. Thanks for the reminder. Just what I needed to hear today.
