It’s nearly 5 o’clock, we have evening plans and she is still napping. For some reason, she chose today to take an extra long nap.
The video monitor clicks on to her slow arousal. After a few minutes, I hear her gibber gabber so I enter the room. As soon as my feet touch the wood floor my nose tells me we have a “big one.” Catch my drift? A stinker in the diaper.
Upon turning on the lamp I discover it is not only a stinker but a royal mess. Poop on her shirt and pants. At first, I think, “Ok, we need to leave in a half hour. I can take off her clothes and wipe her down with wipes. I got this!”
Pulling her shirt off and laying her on the changing table my brain suddenly fires…”RECALCULATING.” The poop is not just in her diaper and on her clothes. No, it is on her hands, face, all over her favorite stuffed bear, the side of the bed, the sheet and blanket. I need reinforcements. Time to call in the daddy for back up!
With his arrival, we are able to tag team the situation. I haul our daughter to the bath tub and he begins cleaning up the mess. (Indeed my husband is a trooper.)
Needless to say, we got the mess cleaned up and left the house only an hour after we intended. Not bad, huh?
Parenthood is full of surprises. Situations that leave us speechless. Times when we want to both laugh and cry. Parenthood is up, down and rather unpredictable.
While I ponder this story one thought floats in my heart. God is not unpredictable. He is constant, steady, the same yesterday today and forever.
I am thankful. How precious it is to have a steady God. A God whose promises remain day after day. A God who loves unconditionally. God is our rock. While the kids rock our world God holds it firm. Steady.
You can trust Him. He isn’t leaving poop trials for you to clean up. God is leaving love trials for you to embrace and hold onto in the chaos of life.

Isaiah 43:2-3a When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; NIV
In my ever changing world, this truth brings stability and comfort. Even Jesus experienced the pressure of the crowds. I am humbled by His response- one of great compassion. He knew His purpose for being here.
